Baccarat is a card game usually played in casinos, and is similar to Faro and Basset. It was likely introduced into France from Italy during the 15th century. Variations include baccarat chemin de fer, baccarat banque, and punto banco.
The game is straightforward, with three possible options, “player”, “banker”, and “tie”.
Valuation of Cards
Playing cards 2-9 are worth face value, 10’s and face cards are worth no points, and aces are worth 1 point. The score is calculated from the sum of all cards modulo 10, or without 10 of the points if the cards add up to more than 10. For instance, a hand with a 3 and a 4 is worth 3+4=7. A hand worth 8+3=11-10=1. If a 4 and a 6 are dealt, the hand is worth 4+6-10=0, or baccarat, the lowest score. The highest score in the game is 9.
Punto Banco (North American Version of Baccarat)
In the United States, Canada, Australia, Sweden, Finland, and Macau, Punto Banco is popular. In this version, the house always banks the game. Players are allowed to bet on one of two hands, either player or banker. Two cards are initially dealt facedown to each hand. Then all cards are turned over and the croupier calls the total in each hand. The player and banker each may then either draw another card or stand pat. The hand with the higher total wins. If either hand contains a total of 8 or 9 points on the first two cards, then no further cards are drawn. This is known as a “natural”.
If no natural is achieved, then, if the player has an orginal total of 0-5, he or she draws one card. If the player has an original total of 6 or 7, he or she stands. If the player did not draw a card, the banker draws if he or she begins with 0-5, and stands if he or she has 6-7 points. If the player draws a 2 or 3 and the banker has 0-4, the banker draws, but if he or she has 5-7, the banker stands. If the player draws a 4 or 5 and the banker has 0-5 he or she draws, but if he or she has 6 or 7, the banker stands. If the player draws 6 or 7, the banker draws if he or she has 0-6, and stands if he or she has 7. If the player draws 8, then the banker draws if he or she has 0-2, and stands if he or she has 6 or 7. If the player draws an 8, the banker draws if he or she has 0-2, and stands if he or she has 3-7. If the player draws a 9, 10, face card, or ace, the banker draws if he has 0-3, and stands if he has 4-7.
The croupier will dealt the cards according to the rules and annouce whether the player or banker is the winning hand. In most casinos 1:1 will be paid to the player and 95 per cent to the banker, with 5 per cent commission to the house, but some play 1:1 to both player and banker, except when the banker wins with a 6. In that case, the banker will be paid 50 per cent, or half the original bet. In that case the house advantage on a bankerbet is 1.46 per cent. The casino edge on player and tie bets are the same as in houses with the commission policy. If both hands have the same value at the end, “Egalite” (equality) is announced, and tie bets win. Tie bets are paid off at 8:1 and bets made on player or banker remain for the next game, although in some casinos betters may be allowed to withdraw their bets.
Punto banco baccarat is played at an oval-shaped table staffed by a croupier who runs things and two dealers who collect and pay off bets while tallying commissions. Six or 8 decks of cards are shuffled by the croupier and dealers. The container of cards, called the shoe, is moved from player to player. The player with the shoe is called the banker, but may actually bet upon either hand. The croupier tells the banker when to deal third cards and announces which hand wins.
In Las Vegas and Atlantic City, casino baccarat is typically played in specially
designed rooms , due to the high stakes often involved. Tens or hundreds of
thousands of dollars may be bet upon single hands. Australin multimillionaire
Kerry Packer was a notably high-betting player. Minimum bets often start at
$25.00-$500.00 US. Maximums are frequently as high as $10,000 US per hand.
Odds
Punto banco has one of the lowest house edges in casinos. The banker bet gives the house an advantage of only 1.06 per cent, and the player bet only gives the house an advantage of 1.24 per cent. The tie bet give the house an advantage of 14.44 per cent if six decks are used. Because of the amounts of money involved, baccarat wins and losses are enough to be reported in the quarterly reports of publicly traded gaming companies.
Minibaccarat
Minibaccarat is basically the same, but played at a smaller table similar to the one used for blackjack. One dealer runs the whole game. Betting minimums and maximums are lower than in the full-sized version, and the pace is faster. This is a popular version outside Atlantic City and Las Vegas.
Makccarat
Makccarat is played in Macau with modified card dealing ordre and rules, but scored the same way as regular baccarat. It is played at the Lisboa Hotel’s Crystal Palace Casino.
Chemin de Fer
Chemin de Fer was the version introduced to France originally and is still the most populare version in France. The name means “railroad” and was so named because the cards were kept in an iron box. Six decks of playing cards are shuffled together and play begins to the right of the croupier, continuing counterclockwise around an oval-shaped table. Discarded cards are put into the middle. One player is designated as the banker and the others are called punters. The banker deals the cards and makes the first wager. Then other players (and sometimes outsiders) are allowed to make wagers until the banker’s wager is met.
The banker deals two cards to himself and two to the remaining players. All cards are dealt face down. The non-banker player with the highest wager represents all the punters. If either the punter representative or the banker has an 8 or a 9, the hands are turned face up and compared. If neither has an 8 or 9, then the player has the option of accepting or refusing another card. If he or she decides to take another card, it is dealt face-up. Customarily the player will accept a card with a hand totalling 0-4 and refuse a card with a hand totalling 6 or 7. The banker then decides whether to accept or refuse a card. After both make their decisions, the cards are turned face-up and compared. If the player’s hand is greater than the banker’s then each player is refunded his or her bet and the same amount from the bank. The job of banker then is passed on to the next player. If the banker’s hand is greather than the player’s hand, all wagers go to the bank and the banker’s position does not change. In the case of a tie, bets remain the same for the next hand. The banker has the option of withdrawing, and the next player in order becomes the banker if he or she bets an amount equal to the bank’s toal. If no one stakes this amont, the next player in order becomes the new banker, and the bank has to reset the amount to that player’s bet.
Baccarat Banque
In baccarat banque the position of banker is closer to permanent. Two, three, or four packs of cards are shuffled together. The banker remains the banker until all the cards have been dealt, he or she retires by choice, or his or her finances are exhausted. In the beginning the bank goes to the player who bets the most or the one who puts his name onto a list first. The banker’s place is halfway along one of the sides of the oval table, facing the croupier. Ten punters occupy the rest of the table. The banker deals cards to his or her right and left and the players on both sides win or lose by the cards dealt to their sides. The rules regarding receiving 8’s and 9’s and receiving cards are the same as at baccarat chemin de fer. Any player may bet the same amount as in the bank or more than one player may contribute shares of the bank’s amount. Any given player may only “go bank” a total of three times. Players going bank must play out their hands, but may leave the game afterward. Upon retiring, the retiree states the amount with which he or she retires. Then other players have the option of becoming the bank. If punters exceed the amount in the bank the croupier pays the punters in order of rotation until the bank is empty.

Online Casino Baccarat Rules
The point count of a baccarat hand is the complete of value cards in the current hand. Aces result as one, and face cards count as 10. The point count may never be greater than nine, because only the final digit in the complete value of the cards can contribute.
The casino cards are dealt to proper regulations. There are few choices when drawing the third card for part of the players cards or the bankers cards. Say the point count of a hand is 8 or 9, a natural, no more cards will be given. If the bankers cards are not a natural, the players cards will always hit for a third card on a point count of 5 and less, and stand on point counts of 6 and greater. The casino bank may be asked to hit a third card based on the regulations.
The casino hand nearest to 9 wins and will be paid even winnings. Winning banker card wagers will be taxed a 5% commission. When both the bettors and the casino bankers hands result in the same totals, it's ruled a tie and neither the banker's bets or the player's bets win or lose. Tie wagers(bets) are paid 8 to 1.
Players Hand Rules
If the dealers cards are a natural (8 or 9), the players cards, will hit for a third card if the count of the players card is 5 or less, and will not draw a card if the point count is 6 or greater.
