I'm wondering if anybody here plays poker for a living, or part time job? either online or in B&M?

I've always fantasized about quiting my job, and moving out the vegas to play poker... but i'm sure my wife would shoot me dead before I got half way there. :)

Playing poker for a living looks exciting and glamorous, and seems like a dream job. With the fame and fortune that goes along with winning televised poker tournaments, more and more players dream about becoming a professional player. Here's a word to the wise: Keep your day job. Everything is not always as it appears.

Those who make a career out of playing poker do so because it seems like a better job than most. Far and away the best thing about being a poker player is that it provides you freedom to be your own boss and work your own hours. To be successful, you have to have real talent, a driving desire to constantly improve, and a great passion to play (which in my mind should be the most important factor in your decision). And I don't mean like to play poker, I mean love to play poker. If you don't love to play, you won't be happy, and it won't matter how successful you are.

The legendary Johnny Moss (three-time world champion and inaugural inductee into the Poker Hall of Fame) once said this about playing poker: "It's a hard way to make an easy living." That is so true. I used to love to talk to Moss about when he played on the road in the old days. He told me, "Beating the games was the easiest thing to do. The toughest part was getting out of town with the money. You had to dodge the robbers, the cheats, and the cops." Luckily, poker has passed that era.

Fortunately, those who play tournaments today don't have to go on the road to play, other than to the finest casino properties in the world. And, yes, most big events pay a million dollars or more to the winner. It is a great life for those who win. The problem is that most don't. Stress and frustration come into play for the vast majority.

You could probably combine a few ideas and make a living with poker, you could teach other people to play for a fee, write books about it, play in a few private games and then play in tournaments.

Remember the movie Rounders?

Sounds like a good idea. Aside from playing the game make money off your skill, knowledge, and experience. A resource speaker of the gambling ways. Nice :D

I won't support your decision to quit your job and move to play poker for a living until and unless you have exceptional poker skills. Poker, at times might appear very simple and easy way to earn money but it is not. Just try to play online for freeroll if you are unaware of poker as it would help in developing skills. Play for your entertainment not to become rich.

I agree with that, poker is supposed to be fun, not some super techincal and stressful thing where you worry about every last detail.

What is the point of it if all you are doing is making yourself crazy trying to run 10 hands at once online. I like to sit back with a cigar and play 1 hand at a time.

Some people do play poker for a living, both online and live. But for them, it is no more a hobby and is
a prime source of income. I feel that people who play poker as a hobby may not be able to make a living by playing poker , because it require a strong commitment and time devotion to be a professional poker player. I would like to share the article that I found about “do's” and “don't” when making online gambling a career.

play poker for living? i don't think this is a great idea. how about keep your job and make poker your sideline? before deciding to choose this path, remember that, in poker, there will be months you'll actually experience a loss in total earnings. so question is, are you ready to take the risk?

if this is something you might want to do, then make sure you practice a lot. however, if you have people that depend on you for financial support, i don't think this is a wise choice.

Well poker for living was the lamest thing I've ever heard. This is a game not a job. And if you stop working for playing poker for living. Why not take life seriously? It not a good choice for me. Co'z poker was not a stable job for me.

Doesn't make a sense to me. Why risk job for a poker. Even though its a job I won't give up my real job into something like this. I prefer being a casino casualties than a poker player for a job.

well it's a matter of choice. i'm not sure what other people think about making this poker game for a living but i'm definitely sure that they choose to do it because they enjoy doing it and earning at the same time.

playing poker for a living might not be a good idea, it might be a source of income anyway but it would be best if you also have a stable job for all we know if we win we also lose.

There are actually people who play poker for a living. These pros travel the country all year round to participate in poker tournaments. They are quite successful too!

Sitting in a poker room spending time with people who want your money is no way to go through life. Get laid and stop wasting your time.
