Common number is between 4 to 6. Any sport will do as long as you understand the game and you know the teams well.

5 teams is common. Some sportsbooks allow players up to 12 teams in a parlay bet. Win all 12 and you get something astronomical figure. Prediciting 12 wins is not easy task I tell you.

First start with 2 teams until you get the hang of parlay betting. That is how you usually start it out - at the minimum. Slowly go up to a number you are most comfortable with after a few tries, or until you feel you are ready to stack it up.

With regard to what sport, what member mBordz said. The sport can be anything that is supported, and most importantly you feel you are most comfortable and knowledgeable with.
